While the Raptors were busy running roughshod over the Brooklyn Nets during the fourth quarter Tuesday night, Toronto's top scorer DeMar DeRozan rested elbows-on-knees on the bench. It wasn't because DeRozan was having an off-night, but because the Raptors had put the Nets away early in roaring to yet another blowout victory. The Raptors went on to beat the lowly Nets 116-104 for their 12th victory in their last 14 appearances, and the chance to rest DeRozan could pay big dividends not only in their upcoming road trip out west, but at the end of the season, when bodies are inevitably breaking down."I don't know how many chances or opportunities we had last year where we were able to sit out a fourth quarter and play 30-and-under minutes, but it's great," DeRozan said.

With Brook Lopez resting, Nets no match for Raptors

With Brook Lopez resting, Nets no match for Raptors

TORONTO — From the time the Nets began their rebuilding project by cleaning out the front office last February and hiring new general manager Sean Marks, the extant theory has been that the shortest path to respectability would be to trade the team's leading asset, 7-foot center Brook Lopez, for future first-round draft picks. With Lopez resting as prescribed by the organization's performance team, the Nets suffered a 116-104 loss to the Raptors Tuesday night at Air Canada Centre that only served to underline how difficult it would be to part with their franchise center. The Nets' starting lineup managed only 45 points without the club's leading scorer and sorely lacked the rim protection Lopez provides as the Raptors outscored them in the paint, 60-44.The Nets kept it close into the middle of the second quarter, cutting their deficit to 47-43 on a three-pointer by point guard Jeremy Lin, who made his first start in four appearances since returning from a nearly six-week absence to recover from a hamstring injury.

Following a dominating performance in Orlando, the Raptors meet the Brooklyn Nets.Let's hope our team doesn't take this shabby yet hard-working group lightly. The last home game before a lengthy road trip pits the Toronto Raptors against a sad collection known as the Brooklyn Nets.I've been doing this awhile, and I can't remember a team facing as steep an uphill climb towards respectability as this one does.
