Raptor Kyle Lowry works around Suns centre Alex Len in Thursday night's game in Phoenix.( Jennifer Stewart / USA Today Sports )PHOENIX—Dwane Casey called him the team's "Swiss Army knife" earlier this week, a multi-faceted tool vital to the Toronto Raptors' success, someone who can be plugged into a variety of spots at a variety of times, given a variety of jobs and then left alone to do them.Patrick Patterson carries neither the cache nor the responsibility of some of his higher profile teammates, but one of the guys the Raptors can ill afford to lose spent most of Thursday night dealing with what team officials called a "strained left knee." The team's most versatile defender played just eight minutes of a 99-91 loss to the Phoenix Suns as the Talking Stick Resort Arena. In dropping their second game in two nights, the Raptors came up with one of their worst offensive showings of the season and didn't play good enough defence to hold off the Suns, who survived 20 turnovers to win.

PHOENIX—Team president Masai Ujiri joined the Raptors earlier this week in Portland to take in part of the season's longest road trip, and was in the arena Thursday night here when his job might have gotten a bit more interesting. It's impossible to determine what the long-term implications will be after a knee injury suffered by Patrick Patterson early in Toronto's 99-91 loss to the Phoenix Suns, but Ujiri will now be on notice that help might be needed.Any long-term absence by Patterson will severely dent Toronto's front court, which is already relying on a rookie, Pascal Siakam, to play more minutes than he might be ready for, while veteran Jared Sullinger is likely a month away as he recovers from foot surgery. And while Ujiri's history suggests he won't over-react to potentially short-term problems, he is having a first-hand look at the situation.
